Radio - quiet quasar environments at 0 . 5 ≤ z ≤ 0 . 8

چکیده
We have quantified the galaxy environments around a sample of 0.5 ≤ z ≤ 0.8 radioquiet quasars using the amplitude of the spatial galaxy–quasar correlation function, Bgq. The quasars exist in a wide variety of environments, some sources are located in clusters as rich as Abell class 1–2 clusters, whereas others exist in environments comparable to the field. We find that on average, the quasars prefer poorer clusters of ≈ Abell class 0, which suggests that quasars are biased tracers of mass compared to galaxies. The mean Bgq for the sample is found to be indistinguishable from the mean amplitude for a sample of radio-loud quasars matched in redshift and optical luminosity. These observations are consistent with recent studies of the hosts of radioquiet quasars at low to intermediate redshifts, and suggest that the mechanism for the production of powerful radio jets in radio-loud quasars is controlled by processes deep within the active galactic nucleus itself, and is unrelated to the nature of the hosts or their environments.

We have observed the galaxy environments around two complete samples of radio-loud (steep-spectrum) and radio-quiet quasars (RLQ and RQQ) at 0.5 ≤ z ≤ 0.8 that are matched in B-luminosity, and find that the environments of both quasar populations are practically indistinguishable. A few objects are found in relatively rich clusters, but on average, they seem to prefer galaxy groups or clusters ...
متن کاملThe Radio Loudness Dichotomy: Environment or Black-hole Mass?
The results of a comprehensive study of the cluster environments and black-hole masses of an optically matched sample of radio-loud and radio-quiet quasars are presented. No evidence is found for a difference in large-scale environments, with both quasar classes found to be located in clusters of Abell class ∼ 0 . Conversely, virial black-hole mass estimates based on Hβ line-widths show a clear...
متن کاملThe cluster environments of powerful radio - loud and radio - quiet AGN
The spatial clustering amplitude (B gq) is determined for a sample of 44 powerful AGN at z ≃ 0.2. No significant difference is detected in the richness of the cluster environments of the radio-loud and radio-quiet sub-samples, both of which typically inhabit environments as rich as Abell Class ≃ 0. Comparison with radio luminosity-matched samples from Hill & Lilly (1991) and Wold et al. (2000a)...
متن کاملImaging and spectroscopy with FORS 1 in the field of Q 0307 − 0015 ? , ? ?
We present VLT–observations of a recently detected galaxy cluster candidate in the field of the radio–quiet quasar Q 0307−0015. R–band images and multi–object spectra (MOS) have been obtained during the commissioning phase II of FORS1 in December 1998. The presumed central cluster galaxy shows the typical spectrum and surface brightness profile of an early–type galaxy and has a redshift of z=0....
متن کاملClustering of galaxies around radio quasars at 0.5z0.8
We have observed the galaxy environments around a sample of 21 radio-loud, steepspectrum quasars at 0:5 # z # 0:82; spanning several orders of magnitude in radio luminosity. The observations also include background control fields used to obtain the excess number of galaxies in each quasar field. The galaxy excess was quantified using the spatial galaxy±quasar correlation amplitude, Bgq, and an ...
